Reader's Favorite Book Review by Grant Leishman
When Rosenda and Angelique Martinez waved their parents and brothers goodbye, as their family headed off to sell their 200 horses to the Army in Fort Collins in 1898, little did the girls realize they would not return. They were set upon and murdered by the very men their father had hired to help them, and the two sisters were suddenly left alone in the world. Rather than wallow in self-pity, the girls, full of righteous anger, vow to hunt down the five men responsible for their family’s murder. In Sometimes Trouble Comes in Two’s by Raymond Cook, the main problem faced by the girls is that neither of them has any experience in guns or shooting. After hiring a passing gunslinger to teach them the rudiments of drawing and firing a pistol, the girls are finally ready to begin their journey of vengeance and justice. Two females, with Colts strapped to their waists, was a rare sight in Colorado in 1898. Rosenda and Angelique soon drew plenty of attention from both those upholding the law and those breaking the law as they traveled around the small towns of early Colorado, searching for the five killers.
The thing I liked most about Sometimes Trouble Comes in Two’s is the two main characters, Rosenda and Angelique Martinez, who as two strong female leads are not robbed of their femininity and their emotions by the role of “bounty hunters” that they have chosen to embrace. Author Raymond Cook does well to soften the harshness of the action and the violence with his two protagonists, who display their caring, understanding and nurturing nature often in the story. The author’s style is very straightforward, simple and matter-of-fact, as the girls travel the roads and towns of frontier Colorado. In this sense, it is a very readable story and could appeal as much to young adults as adults. The premise of two female gunslingers is rare and unusual enough in itself to capture a reader’s attention and Cook does a good job of telling their story. If the author’s intent was to show the counterpoint between the generally accepted version of the “West” as a wild and lawless frontier with the idea that the majority of settlers were good, simple folk just seeking a quiet and peaceful life, I feel he achieved his result.
5 Star Comment. Samuel Mejorado March 17, 2014, All I can say to those who haven’t read one of Mr. Cook’s books yet is to pick this book first. I would hate to be one of the men these two gals are searching for. Talk about guts, determination and emotion captured by this author’s imagination! This is definitely a good read!

Mr. Cook is a very promising up & coming writer of westerns & his story line is always extremely interesting.Pepe & Maria Martinez bought the Ford ranch outside of Crested Butte, Colorado. Bringing their four sons and two daughters from El Paso, Texas they planned to raise & sell horses.
After many buying trips to acquire his herd Pepe gets a contract to sell 200 horses to the army. With his four sons he will still need to hire five men to help get the herd to Fort Collins. With the deadline for getting the horses delivered looming he is getting desperate when five men answer his inquires & since they seem a God-send, he hires them. Leaving his two daughters to oversee the ranch he takes Maria along with a chuck wagon to cook & begins the journey to Fort Collins.
After selling the herd before starting for home they all camp outside the fort & the temptation of that much money cannot be resisted by the five hired hands. They brutally murder Pepe & his wife & sons.
Upon learning of their family's death the girls, Angelique 28, & Rosenda 30 vow to get justice. They hire gunfighter Jacob Branson to teach them how to use the peacemakers their uncle has sent them & thus begins their journey to find the five outlaws & prevent them from ever doing something like that to anyone else.
They encounter the first of the five outlaws in Clifton & manage to get him to the sheriff's office only to encounter a very crooked sheriff that they are forced to kill before he kills them. Since there is no law in the town now the mayor decides to deputize the girls so someone can guard the prisoner, Bill Taylor & get him to trial to hopefully hang. But, when Angelique & Rosenda are escorting him to the judge for trial he is able to take one of their guns and shoots them both. Now, as you're reading, you are thinking...this is not going well...They have four outlaws to go and both girls are shot even though they manage to kill Taylor. Are the girls up to this challenge?
It's a beautiful story about the girls & the people they encounter both good & bad along the way.
After reading several of this writer's offerings I found that the later books are the best. There are still too many tears for my liking but the story & the beautiful characters & their kind hearts come shinning through. I would recommend this book to anyone desiring a good western.
